My hiking partner Marisa and I have conquered Mt. Rubidoux so many times, that we were looking for another challenge. Shortly after Halloween, she and I went to Box Springs to try to hike to the C behind UCR, but we didn't leave ourselves enough time and had to turn around about halfway there. We decided to try again last week, and only our determination got us there.
There is apparently no real road to the C from the top... it breezes past it but doesn't take you there. Even though we found a sign warning against vandalizing the C (telling us we were on the right track) we couldn't find it anywhere. We went running up and down the sprawl of the mountain, like straight up wilderness looking for it, and couldn't find it to save our lives. The sun was setting and we already knew it would be dark for some of the hike back, which was a little worrisome, but we did not just hike two hours for nothing! Finally, Marisa found it, and it was such a glorious sight! So weird to find it concrete, dilapidated, and yellow.

Marisa gets the credit for finding it, just as the sun was setting! |

We ran into an old foreign hiker with his dog who told us an alternative way to go down, which we decided to take because of how quickly it was getting dark. It was pretty steep and our legs were turning to jello on the way down, but we were racing the sun. We lost. We had the go down through some rough underbrush and cross train tracks in the dark, came out into a neighborhood about half a mile from the trail we started on and where our cars were... but at least we made it to that damn C!
